The astronomical observatory was opened in 2006 and is located in the Shumen Plateau Nature Park, near the Monument to the Founders of the Bulgarian State. The observatory is equipped with 3 domes and 5 telescopes, thanks to which a wide variety of objects in outer space can be observed. The astronomical observatory is used both for educational purposes and is open to visitors – lovers of outer space.
The domes and telescopes of the Observatory are located on the roof deck of the building, and on the first floor there is a conference hall with 20 seats and an exhibition hall with an exposition of instruments used in astronomy. In addition, the walls are beautifully painted with interesting facts about the discovered cosmos, and rare minerals are displayed on tables. On the second
The observatory’s second floor houses a classroom for theoretical and practical astronomy classes, as well as a server for controlling the telescopes.
If you are wondering why there is a study hall, the answer is quite logical: Shumen University is the only university in Bulgaria that offers studies in Astronomy (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD). Astronomy
The observatory is an integral part of students’ daily lives because it gives them the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice.
Interesting fact! In 2004, two meat astronomers discovered an asteroid and named it “Shumen”. Thus our city became one of the few in the world whose name bears an astronomical object.
