A Natural Wonder

Biserna Cave is renowned for its stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and breathtaking formations resembling precious gemstones—hence its name, Biserna (meaning Pearl). One of its most mesmerizing sights is the Biserna Waterfall, a fascinating combination of karst formations and underground water flows.

Situated in the heart of Shumen Plateau Nature Park, Biserna Cave is the longest cave in the region, stretching nearly 3 kilometers. It was first discovered in 1928, but remained closed to visitors for decades to preserve its delicate ecosystem. Today, following careful restoration and conservation efforts, it is open to tourists eager to explore one of Bulgaria’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

As you step inside, an extraordinary underground world unfolds before your eyes—majestic stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years, shimmering crystals, and imposing limestone structures that create an almost mystical atmosphere. With a constant year-round temperature of about 10°C, visiting the cave is a pleasant experience even during the hottest summer months.

Biserna Cave and Its Bat Population

Beyond its mesmerizing beauty, Biserna Cave is also home to one of Bulgaria’s largest bat colonies. More than 14 different species of bats find refuge in its galleries, making it a site of significant ecological importance. Visitors to the cave have the unique opportunity to observe these fascinating flying mammals in their natural habitat—an experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Did you know? The cave is closed during the bat breeding season to ensure their safety and well-being.

Eco-Trails and Hiking Routes
