Shumen Plateau

Declared a protected area in 1980, Shumen Plateau Nature Park spans 3,929 hectares. Its highest point reaches 502 meters, and 90% of its territory is covered in forest – mainly mixed deciduous and coniferous trees. The park is home to over 250 species of medicinal plants and 64 protected plant species, including rare orchids and the Miziyski beech.

Wildlife in the Park – Fauna

Over 350 species of invertebrates and 240 species of vertebrates inhabit the area. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll be impressed by the red deer, roe deer, badgers, and foxes that roam the region. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers – with owls, woodpeckers, eagles, and over 200 other bird species. Among the reptiles, protected species include the Aesculapian snake, the viper, and the green lizard.

Historical and Cultural Heritage

The Shumen Plateau is not just a natural oasis – it is living history, dating back to the Chalcolithic period. Some of the most notable sites include:

Shumen Fortress (The Old Town) – an archaeological reserve covering 28 decares, featuring residential, religious, and defensive structures.
Rock monasteries from the 12th–14th centuries, nestled in the eastern and southern cliffs, once centers of spirituality.
The “Founders of the Bulgarian State” monument, which recreates key moments in the history of the First Bulgarian Kingdom.

Hiking Trails for Every Taste

The park offers numerous hiking trails, each with its own unique charm:

“A Journey to the Past” (M4) – 2 hours, includes shelters, fountains, and a rock monastery.
“Bulgaria Originates from Here” (M5) – 4 hours, covers the Shumen Fortress, “Detelina” shelter, the Monument to the Students, and ends at the “Founders of the Bulgarian State” monument – a must for anyone enjoying Shumen hiking tourism.
“Adrenaline” (M1) – ideal for thrill-seekers.
“To Bukacite Hut with a Backpack” (M3) – a longer, but extremely scenic trail.
Other trails include: “Lesson Along the Forest Path” (M2), “Relax” (M6), and “The Magic of the Forest” (M7).

Cycling Routes for Adventurers

The park also offers a variety of cycling trails with different lengths and difficulty levels:

“Amateurs” – 8.1 km, suitable for beginners.
“Great Pedaling” – 20 km, a medium-difficulty trail with picturesque views.
“The Bear” – 5.2 km, an extreme trail for experienced mountain bikers.
